On 18th May 2017, the world received the sad news that Chris Cornell, the lead singer of Soundgarden & Audioslave, had died at the age of 52. Later fans found out that Cornell had hung himself in his hotel room and that his death was ruled a suicide.
Here at Astrochicks, we were shocked by his tragic death, and believe he was one of the greatest rock singers of all time. We were curious if there was anything in his Astrology natal chart that would point to depression and why he committed suicide.
Here’s what secrets his Astrology Chart revealed…
Sun in Cancer
Chris Cornell was born on July 20, 1964, in Seattle, Washington. This means that his Sun sign was in Cancer. A family man, who was smart, creative, sensitive, moody, and curious about life.
Medical Astrology is a branch of Astrology that can tell us if people are susceptible to certain illnesses and also how they are likely to handle stress. To do this, we look at the Sun sign first which in this case is the zodiac sign of the Crab.
We know now that Chris Cornell suffered from depression and social anxiety for most of his life due to drugs and alcohol but also that he didn’t seek treatment for years. This is typical of a Cancer approach to depression and many people born under this zodiac sign might not even acknowledge that there is a problem. They try to sweep everything under the rug and pretend it isn’t happening, and they will often self medicate to handle daily stress. Cancer is a very sociable sign, so if they are feeling blue, they surround themselves with people and party up a storm to try and feel better. For Chris Cornell, he channeled his pain into his music and penned some incredibly powerful and emotional songs including Black Hole Song and Say Hello 2 Heaven.
In this way, Chris Cornell seemed to be typical of his zodiac sign, as he openly admitted that he didn’t seek treatment for a long time and that he would party, drink, and take drugs to mask his anxiety and depression. The problem with Cancer is that they bury their problems deep inside themselves instead of dealing with them. What happens? They resurface at some point, and it is usually worse than before. This seems to have been the case with Chris Cornell, who at the end felt perhaps he couldn’t cope or had a temporary lapse in judgment.
His Moon in Sagittarius made him a spiritual truth seeker. One of the biggest humanitarians of the zodiac signs, Chris Cornell’s last charity project was for a film about the Armenian genocide. For the film, he wrote the beautiful song, “The Promise.”
His Moon in Sagittarius squared Saturn in Pisces and Uranus in Virgo, and revealed someone who suffered severe insecurity and feelings of abandonment that fueled his depression. Fortunately, he found true love with his wife Vicky Cornell a Leo, who shared his Moon in Sagittarius creating a soulmate connection. They shared an intuitive understanding of one another and shared a deep emotional bond that he never felt before. Not all fans may understand their relationship, but his Astrology chart reveals he deeply loved her.
A watery chart:
Chris Cornell had a very watery Astrology chart overall. As well as Scorpio (water) in Neptune (God of the Sea) he also had his North Node in Cancer (water) and Saturn in Pisces (water). In fact, he had all three of the water signs strongly represented.
What does that mean? Well, the water signs are the most emotional of the zodiac. People with a lot of water in their chart tend to be very sensitive, and their feelings get hurt easily. When this happens, they bury their problem which only makes it worse. They may often have heavy, dark emotions that they have carried around with them for years, and these then cause suicidal thoughts.
Venus and Mars Conjunct
Chris Cornell had Venus and Mars conjunct in Gemini. It gave him have a magnetic sex appeal that was attractive to both men and women. This astrological aspect opposes his Moon in Sagittarius which reveals difficult issues with his Mom, women, and feeling overwhelmed by intimacy and emotions. This was squared by both Saturn in Pisces and Uranus in Virgo that reveals someone who has an impulsive nature and feels insecure in relationships. He never completely felt safe in this world and would fantasize about escaping through drugs or death.
Neptune in Scorpio:
Oh boy. This is a tough one for sure. Chris Cornell had Neptune in Scorpio in his chart which is a very tough placement to have. Neptune is the God of the Sea, and it points to hidden depths and secrets. Even more so with Scorpio in the mix which rules sex and death. Both Neptune and Scorpio individually lead to addiction issues, and here we have them both together, so it spells double trouble. People with Scorpio in Neptune are interested in alternative theories and the occult. (his Mom is a psychic) They are known to want to experiment with substances, and this is true of Chris Cornell who had addiction issues that started at the age of 13.
Those with Scorpio in Neptune are also known for having extreme personalities. It’s all or nothing for them, and the dark waters of Scorpio and Neptune mean that they bury secrets inside them only for it to come rushing out like a tidal wave leading to extreme behavior. This seems to be what happened with Chris Cornell.
Saturn in Pisces:
Saturn in Pisces in Chris Cornell’s chart is particularly significant as it points to heightened sensitivity. On the positive side, people with Saturn in Pisces can often be very artistic (like Cornell) and also very spiritual or even psychic. The flipside of this, however, is that they can also be prone to pessimism and paranoia.
A chart with Saturn in Pisces can also point to someone who has trouble letting go of past pain, and we know that Chris Cornell’s parents were both alcoholics. Perhaps he carried this with him which is why he repeated their addictive behaviors. If he couldn’t let of deep pain he suffered in the past, then that may explain why he chose to end his life.
It’s also interesting that Saturn is in Pisces in the 6th House on Chris Cornell’s Astrology chart. Again this is heavy. The 6th House is all about medicine, the body, and health. With massive Saturn pressing on the 6th House it can sometimes point to chronic illness and need to medicate over an extended period. After Chris Cornell’s death, it came out that he has been taking a cocktail of prescription medication for years to deal with anxiety, agoraphobia, and depression.
Chris Cornell’s chart tells us a lot about his feelings, his susceptibility to depression, links to substance abuse, and the possibility of suicide. When he passed away in May 2017, the Saturn transit in Sagittarius conjunct his Moon and it opposed his Venus & Mars in Gemini. In a moment of despair, he wanted to flirt with death and experience the ultimate freedom of the afterlife.
Not surprising, after looking at Chris Cornell’s Astrology chart and what happened in the end, but this is the reason why astrologers look at natal charts in such detail. If we can look ahead, it can show us how to get the help we need.
RIP Chris Cornell, thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
