Harry Potter, Daniel RadcliffeWhen production wrapped on the eighth and (for now) final Harry Potter film in 2010, all of its stars were eager to move on to their next projects. Emma Watson soon found her next roles in films like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and My Date with Marilyn, and Rupert Grint filmed a World War II movie called Into the White. The star of the Harry Potter franchise, Daniel Radcliffe, has remained constantly busy, finding new roles on stage and screen. He made his musical debut on Broadway in 2011 playing J. Pierrepont Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and ventured into new film territory, starring in the 2012 thriller The Woman in Black. While the actors have admitted that their days playing roles in the Harry Potter universe are probably behind them, however, Radcliffe has admitted recently that he would be keen to appear as another member of the Potter family if the opportunity ever arose.

In a recent interview with Time Out, Daniel Radcliffe hinted that if author J.K. Rowling were ever to pen a sequel about the characters from her renowned franchise, he would love to consider playing Harry’s father, James Potter, in the film adaptation. While he admitted that the chances of Rowling revisiting the Potter world are slim–the author has stated that she has no current plans to write another book about the wizarding world, though she won’t say “never”–he specifically stated: “No more schoolboy stuff. A cameo as Harry’s dad? That would be perfect!”

Of course, if it were ever to come to pass that Radcliffe would have the opportunity to play James Potter, Rowling would have to get to work quite quickly. According to the Harry Potter books, James Potter and his wife Lily were both murdered by Lord Voldemort when they were only 21. Since Radcliffe celebrates his 24th birthday in July, 2013, he is already beginning to outgrow the role as it was originally written. In the film adaptations of the seven books, however, filmmakers decided to cast the role of James (who only appeared after death in ghostly forms and flashbacks) as a much older father. James Potter was played by actor Adrian Rawlins, who was already 43 when he filmed the role in the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. If a sequel about the Potter parents and their friends were to be written, it is likely that the story’s timeline would have to be altered again for Radcliffe to be considered for the role.

While J.K. Rowling has all but refused the idea of writing a prequel about her Harry Potter characters, speculation still runs rampant that she may decide to revisit the magical world by writing about Harry’s kids as they attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You can read about the introduction to Harry’s children, James, Albus, and Lily, as well as Ron and Hermione’s children, Rose and Hugo, in the Epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It seems much more feasible that if these stories were to come to pass, Daniel Radcliffe might be called upon to reprise his role as Harry Potter at some point in the distant future, but this time he would be playing the father figure.
