James Franco, like most Aries, doesn’t like to be ignored. Whether as an actor, a director, or a model, his career choices have often been provocative. Franco demands our attention and it is his nature to want to be liked and praised for his accomplishments.

One would therefore expect him to become upset if false gossip tarnished his reputation. In a preview of an upcoming interview in Playboy magazine, the Huffington Post reports that James Franco remains angry about a rumor (circulating since 2008) that he is a sexual predator.

“Then Gawker picked that up and did this ‘Gay Rapist’ story that was so f*cking offensive because I have friends who have been raped,” he remembers. “They did a very classy online reader’s poll asking which actor who had a big movie out that summer had beaten up and raped his boyfriend and then paid him off so it wouldn’t go to court. . . . My lawyer called them and said that it was completely untrue and to take it down. They said, ‘Well, we’re just reporting what the New York Post told us. If Franco wants to make a comment on our blog, we’re happy to report it.’ It was a choice. Either let this thing build and become bigger and bigger, or just let it go and let them be the petty scumbags that they are.”

Taking offense at this type of vicious speculation is understandable. Rape is no joking matter. Yet, a public response at the time may have fueled the fire even more.  James Franco knows that people often believe false rumors. He is also aware that fans often mistake actors for the characters they play. “Everyone thinks I’m a stoner, and some people think I’m gay because I’ve played these gay roles. That’s what people think, but it’s not true.”

Given his characteristically Aries sensitivity to public perception, and his desire to let the gay rape rumor fade away, one would expect that James Franco might never again play the part of a gay man, or accept a role in a violent film. Of course as fans already know, Franco is a true artist at heart, and continues to choose challenging movie roles.

Surprisingly, however, a review of James Franco’s filmography since the rumor began reveals that themes of homosexuality and violence have come to dominate his work.  And, if that weren’t enough, Franco is also set to play satanic serial killer Richard Ramirez in the Night Stalker.

What does Astrochicks make of all of this? James Franco is a provocative guy, who’s not afraid to take a walk on the dark side. He will continue to entertain fans and push the media to continue to spread false rumors about him. Because in Hollywood, sex sells.
