Born an Aries, Lady Gaga is every bit the fiery, energetic, independent, and intelligent woman one would expect. In a fascinating interview with The Advocate’s Jeremy Kinser (the cover story for the magazine’s upcoming August edition), she explains what led her to cancel a mega-bucks deal with Target for the exclusive rights to market her number one album BORN THIS WAY.
The retailer’s reputation for gay-friendly policies, it seemed, made it a perfect match to sell an album championing LGBT equality. It turns out, however, that Target’s political action committee contributed $150,000 to a Republican group that ran ads supporting antigay candidate Tom Emmer in his 2010 run for the Minnesota governorship. Upon discovering this news, Gagaloo gave the company’s executives an ultimatum.
“You’re either going to try and change or you’re not,” Gaga recalls of the meeting, in which she had insisted that Target ally itself with LGBT charities and organizations. While the details were not made public, the terms did not satisfy the singer. “Taking an ambiguous stance is not what I’m about, obviously. I like to go right for the ass-kicker. You’re either in or you’re out.”
Like Aries the ram, who butts its horns into enemies, Lady Gaga tackles new challenges head-on, and kicks ass!
While she loves all of her “little monsters,” it’s clear that there is a special place in Gaga’s heart for her millions of queer fans. Gagaloo explains: “My love for my gay fans is just pure, authentic love for them as supporters of me from the beginning, and me feeling connected to their struggles as someone who is a part of their fight.”
