Justin Timberlake stars in the new movie “The Social Network,” as Sean Parker the elusive rockstar entrepreneur, who helped Mark Zuckerberg get funding for Facebook. Over the last couple of years, Justin Timberlake has gotten a bad rap in the media, for pursuing his dream of becoming a serious actor.
In the Facebook movie, the Social Network, Sean Parker is portrayed as a brilliant but obnoxious entrepreneur reject. If you look up Sean Parker on Wikipedia, it has very little to say about an entrepreneur who helped found some of the biggest social media companies in the world. He’s responsible for the creation of Napster, Plaxo, Causes and of course taking Facebook to the next level. Quite an amazing accomplishment for a guy who is only 31 years old and a free spirited Sagittarius.
If you caught the film this weekend, Sean Parker is the paranoid party dude, who has a lot of serious venture capital connections. Part rock star, entrepreneur, and arrogant punk, Sean Parker is the real deal. After befriending Mark Zuckerberg, he breaks up the BFF partnership with Eduardo Saverin and starts a heavy bromance with the CEO of Facebook. Together Sean Parker and Mark Zuckerberg choose greed over friendship. Unfortunately for Sean Parker, he’s his own worst enemy, his fondness for young girls and blow gets him in serious trouble. He ends up getting kicked out of Facebook and leaves Mark Zuckerberg to steer the ship alone.
The big question movie goers and Facebook fans ask, is this the true character portrayal of Sean Parker? He says no, it’s the Hollywood version. According to Sean Parker, he’s not the cash-hungry, cold character that Timberlake portrays. And others agree – according to a recent Vanity Fair feature, Sean Parker is “more complex and more interesting” and “almost painfully cerebral.” I wonder what Eduardo Saverin would say?
Today, Sean Parker is a Managing Partner at the Founders Fund. Headed by Peter Thiel and Ken Howery, together they manage a venture capital fund of $250 million. I guess he’s no longer trolling Harvard campuses looking for the next big deal. It will be interesting to see if paparazzi start following Sean Parker around after watching Justin Timberlake channel is inner nerd. Fascinating to watch, even more fascinating is Sean Parker, a guy who is like a cat with nine lives. One impressive guy. Astrochicks gives the film two big thumbs up.
