Andy Whitfield, the star of Spartacus Blood and Sand, will not be returning for the second season of the Starz Entertainment hit series.  The actor who was diagnosed with cancer, non Hodgkin lymphoma, sadly has returned and will require aggressive treatment.

In a statement today, Andy Whitfield said, “It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far.”

The future of the series — season 2 had tentatively been set to air next September — is uncertain. Starz still plans to premiere the series’ prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, this January.

The Australian actor is married, his wife Vashti and Andy Whitfield have two children. Thoughts and prayers go out his family and him. Astrochicks wishes him the best and hopefully a full recovery.
