Yeardley Love, a 22 year old college student and LaCrosse player was murdered early Monday morning by her ex boyfriend, George Huguely. In this shocking crime, Huguely admits to kicking her bedroom door down, shaking her violently and hitting her head against the bedroom wall several times. After Huguely realized she was dead, he stole her computer laptop and left her apartment.
About 230am, Monday May 3rd, police responded to a 911 call they received from Yeardley Love’s roommate who believed she had died of an alcohol overdose. When police arrived, they found Love already dead and had appeared to be beaten. Hours later, George Huguely was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in her death.
The death of the beautiful young coed has stunned the UVA campus. What friends and family find even more tragic is that she was killed by someone she knew and loved. Was alcohol or drugs a factor in this crime of passion? What set George Huguely off and why was he so angry at Yeardley that he felt the need to end her life? Did she end the relationship with George Huguely because he was abusive towards her?
Huguely’s lawyer said at his client’s arraignment that he is confident Love’s death was an accident. He says, “Because this case involves an active, ongoing investigation, any comment on the specific facts would be inappropriate at this time. However, we are confident that Ms Love’s death was not intended, but an accident with a tragic outcome. In the meantime, George is withdrawing from the University of Virginia and remains in the custody of authorities. Grief has descended on this community as we attempt to understand what happened and why. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who grieve this terrible loss.”
How can kicking someone’s door down be an accident? How can shaking someone violently and beating their head against the wall be an accident? How can taking someone’s computer to destroy email evidence be an accident? It sounds like cold blooded murder to me. Either way, the situation is incredibly sad for both families. Two lives were ruined over a lover’s quarrel gone wrong.
Thoughts and prayers go out Yeardley Love, her family and friends. Also, for Huguely parents as well. A painful and senseless death.
