They should hand out Oscars to suffering wives married to certain actors. In the latest news, Mel Gibson’s wife decided
to finally pull the plug on her marriage. I guess she couldn’t take it anymore. Well at least they lasted 28 years. Once you hit 50, I imagine your quality of life is more important than who you’re married to.
His publicist, Alan Neirob, has released this statement to the press on behalf of the couple. “Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so.”
Gibson, unlike his wife, gives a very specific date of separation — Aug. 26, 2006. Mel’s infamous DUI arrest after being at a local Malibu bar, chatting up the ladies (and his subsequent anti-Semitic rant to a cop) was less than a month earlier, on July 28, 2006.
Was that the public humiliation straw that broke the patient camel wife’s back? Insiders have long noted that Robyn and Mel grew further apart after the arrest.
Mel Gibson, a Capricorn, is a very talented and down to earth guy. Unfortunately, he loves to get his party on just a little bit too much. Plus, his zealous religious beliefs are probably a drag.
In a October 12, 2006 interview with Diane Sawyer, Gibson spoke on his struggle to remain sober.
“The risk of everything – life, limb, family – is not enough to keep you from it… You cannot do it of yourself. And people can help, yeah. But it’s God. You’ve got to go there. You’ve got to do it. Or you won’t survive…This whole experience in a way, for me, I’m sort of viewing it now as a kind of a blessing because, firstly, I got stopped before I did any real damage to anyone else. Thank God for that. I didn’t hurt myself, you know. I didn’t leave my kids fatherless… The other thing is sometimes you need a cold bucket of water in the face to sort of snap to because you’re dealing with a sort of a malady of the soul, an obsession of the mind and a physical allergy. And some people need a big tap on the shoulder. In my case, public humiliation on a global scale seems to be what was required.”
Bummer, we wish him and his wife Robyn Moore the best. The end of a marriage is always sad.
