As the Actor’s strike looms, many Hollywood actors are on the fence. They can’t decide on whether they
should strike or not. Today, union hard-liners prevailed in a showdown at the Screen Actors Guild, defeating attempts by moderates to scuttle a planned strike referendum and oust negotiators they blamed for stalled contract talks with Hollywood’s major studios.
I support SAG, at the same time, they need to get real. California has the second highest unemployment rate in the country. Who is number one? Michigan. California is NUMBER TWO! If they decide to strike, they will cripple the California economy even more. Plus, it’s a VERY STRONG possibility the state may go bankrupt next month. Every American in this country is hurting, now is NOT the time to strike.
Uncertainty over a strike vote also leaves in doubt whether next month’s Oscars might be caught up in a labor confrontation. SAG’s 120,000 members have been without a film and prime-time TV contract since their old labor pact expired on June 30, after studios presented their “final” offer.
Many fans may say who cares? Of course, actors should care. If they do strike, you can expect to see reality TV shows, 24/7. If actors think “good roles” are scarce now, just wait until they strike. Many can kiss their careers goodbye. Unless of course, they want to do celebrity versions of reality shows. Celebrity Rehab anyone?
Personally, I’m a reality television whore, but I still like to watch a good sitcom once and awhile. Also, I’m a big fan of Desperate Housewives, Dexter, Crash, and many other shows.
On a side note, I received a nice email from Savethebiz.org. They have a very informative video on what the strike means not only for Hollywood, but the average American. Be informed. Please check it out.
