Stunning news this weekend, LA insiders are buzzing about the sudden directorial departure of Catherine Hardwicke, for
the upcoming film New Moon. Hardwicke who was instrumental in casting Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for Twilight, has media and fans wondering if a new director can capture the romantic essence of Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster vampire series.
Perhaps more important, Hardwicke, who in fact is still on the promotional tour for the film, which has grossed almost $140 million in the U.S. alone, is something of a “Twilight” fangirl herself. The night before the Los Angeles premiere, she visited fans in line — many of whom had been there for a couple of days — posing for pictures and signing autographs. She was also at least partially responsible for getting the film’s initial script, which she compared to “Charlie’s Angels,” nixed in favor of a more faithful telling.
Movie watchers have already begun discussing who should take over. RopeOfSilicon.com has five female suggestions, among them Kimberly Pierce, who directed “Boys Don’t Cry,” and Mira Nair from “The Namesake.” Earlier this month, Film.com weighed in with its top choices, including young upstart Sarah Polley and long-shot Sofia Coppola.
Word on the street, Melissa Rosenberg is still penning the script for New Moon. Personally, I think Sofia Coppola would make an excellent director for New Moon. It’s being filmed in Italy and she definitely has that “romantic but quirky”vibe in her films. Either way, New Moon is guaranteed to be a blockbuster, and hopefully a “real romance” will bloom between Stewart and Pattinson. Stay tuned.

Too bad! Twilight was SO good, what if it’s bad with a new director??
They should have keep Catherine Hardwicke!
It is sort of a disappointment, but I would like to see what the new director could pull out of their sleeve. I was very disappointed that Catherine Hardwicke didn’t put in the meadow scene in like the book, or the scene with learning about Carlisle’s past, but it was a phenomenal movie. Let’s just hope this new director can take all the stress and turn in a fabulous movie!
