Maybe Axl Rose should change the name of his new Guns ‘n’ Roses album to the “Dr. Pepper Controversy.” The band’s new
album dropped last week, in an exclusive retail distribution agreement with Best Buy. Axl Rose also partnered up with Dr. Pepper for a free soda giveaway. Unfortunately, it looks like Dr. Pepper wasn’t prepared for its overwhelming response and now Axl is pissed.
Axl Rose is accusing Dr Pepper of botching a soda giveaway tied to Guns N’ Roses’ new album. And he’s demanding the company take out a full-page apology in The New York Times [NYT], Los Angeles Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal.
His lawyer wants Dr Pepper to pay the band for what he calls “unauthorized use and abuse of their publicity and intellectual property rights.”
I have to agree with Axl Rose on this one. Dr. Pepper received a HUGE amount of publicity, they totally dropped the ball on the marketing campaign. Axl an Aquarius, is demanding, intense, and an artistic genius. Over the years, he’s attracted alot of haters and jealous rock gods along the way.
In a 2006 interview, Jon Bon Jovi was critical of the public and media attention Rose received, despite not having released an album for years: “You know what pisses me off? I was reading this British rock magazine this month and there was a story about Axl Rose and the $13 million Guns N’ Roses record that was never made. That motherfucker hasn’t made a record in 13 years and he gets all that attention. You know what I’ve done in 13 years? A lot. But they have continued to write about the freak show aspect of him. Because he’s a recluse. That makes him interesting, right?”
What a baby. Get over it Jon, you’re a great musician, but you will NEVER be Axl Rose. I don’t think you can even say Bon Jovi and Guns ‘n’ Roses in the same sentence. Yes, Axl Rose is difficult, intense, but in my opinion he’s one of the greatest singers in rock history.
On his new album, I really love it. It’s a unique sound, a true rock epic, and his voice is electrifying. Now, all we need is the original band members to get back together. Velvet Revolver has left their label, Scott Weiland has moved on to drunken solos, and Adler is in rehab. Come on Axl, fans would love it. Cross your fingers.
