Shame on the police department in Blue Ash, Ohio letting your officers arrest a 89 year old woman for not giving back a football. Can you
believe this? How petty can you be? I guess the police in Blue Ash (a suburb of Cincinnati) aren’t very busy these days, if they have time to arrest a poor 89 year old woman. The city is ranked as the 20th most dangerous in the country. I can see why, all those Senior Citizen ball snatchers. I wonder how many REAL criminals went free that day.
Police in Ohio say an 89-year-old woman is facing a charge of petty theft because neighborhood children accuse her of refusing to give back their football.
Edna Jester was arrested last week in the Cincinnati suburb of Blue Ash.
Police say one child’s father complained that Jester kept the youngsters’ ball after it landed in her yard. Police Capt. James Schaffer says there has been an ongoing dispute in the neighborhood over kids’ balls landing in the woman’s yard.
Jester said Monday she has received many calls and didn’t have time to discuss the matter any more.
Jester is to appear in court next month. The maximum penalty for a petty theft conviction in Ohio is six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
I would be embarrassed if I was the Police Chief, what was his department thinking? Why waste taxpayers money on arresting this woman? Also, why don’t the parents just buy the kid a new football? It sounds like Cincinnati needs to do some serious government house cleaning. Crazy stuff!
How petty can the old lady be. All she had to do was give back the ball. Heck, all she had to do was sign the ticket after she refused to give back the ball.
The old lady told them to call the police. She told the police to arrest her. She even asked to be hand cuffed.
She’s back peddling about ‘giving the ball back later’. She’s kept anywhere from 3-10 balls.
Theft is theft. She got what she specifically asked for.
I’m sorry I disagree. She’s 89 years old, she could be senile, or any host of illnesses. I would imagine the kids were constantly throwing the ball in her yard and she got sick of it.
If I were the kids parents, I would buy them a new ball. I would tell them to stay away from her yard. I WOULD NOT have her arrested, that is absolutely ridiculous. Cincinnati is the 20th MOST DANGEROUS city in the country. If the cops are wasting their time on catching football snatchers, real criminals are committing real crimes and not being arrested.

This is an ongoing problem. Those parents should be ashamed that they haven’t taught their children to respect their neighbor’s property.
If I were that mother, I’d be apologizing to the neighbor, not calling the police on her.
Wait… I have been in that situation. I am raising three children in a neighborhood where the houses are close together. My children know they are to respect our elderly neighbor and keep their stuff out of her yard.
Why didn’t the parents teach the child to respect his elders and to not trespass onto other people’s property without their permission? Using a neighbor’s yard (regularly it appears) as part of a ball field?!?!?! And then the neighbor gets arrested? This is backwards.
These parents act as though this woman has no rights.
This should be a warning to all people living close to children. Place a NO TRESPASSING sign in the yard. Then you can file charges against them! This kid is old enough to read.
How come we cannot afford to keep rapist and murderers locked up BUT we can afford to lock up an 89 yr old for keeping a football of a spoiled teen next door who is too lazy to go the local park to play football. Instead of teaching her brat to be respectful of other people’s property and go to the park, the mother of that teen brat calls the cops on the elderly neighbor. Shame on that brat’s mother and on a society that arrests an 89 yr old for simply wanting to live in peace in her own home.
How shameful of the parents and the police. This has been an ongoing problem for this poor woman. The parents are the ones that should be arrested for not teaching their children to respect their elders. Whatever happened to good old fashioned respect and common sense??
If the woman has kept 3 (or as the disrepectful neighbors say 10 balls) this situation is way out of hand - and it is apparent that it is a “problem” by the remarks in the story that the police had been called in the past. Your yard does not become part of the “football field” just because a disrespectful kid wants it to be. The woman was in her rights to keep the ball and I applaud her. Second, if my grandmother or mother was arrested because of some disrespectful neighbors I think I would be knocking on their door.

We the tax payers are paying for this old bat’s social security and her healthcare which keeps her alive so she can steal children’s balls and be a bitch. Are you serious Tonia? You’re going to be a 89 year old lady someday if you’re lucky. I think your comments were incredibly UNCHRISTIAN. Taxpayers DON’T pay social security, YOU pay your own social security, it’s taken out of your check every week. So she is living on what she’s earned. If you know the story correctly about the kids, they did this OVER 20 times. Arresting 89 year old people is RIDICULOUS and you should be ASHAMED of yourself.
