Talk about having nine lives, one man, Erik Summers, has escaped death twice in the last five years. In 2005, he walked away from a deadly commuter train crash in Los Angeles. On Friday, he and several other riders on the Ventura County Metrolink line whom he frequently shares his trip with did it again.

According to the New York Times:

Mr. Summers and his fellow riders were on the same Metrolink line on a January morning three years ago when the train plowed into a pickup truck left on the tracks by a man who police officials said was trying to get the attention of his estranged wife by causing a catastrophic accident. The man, Juan M. Alvarez, was convicted in June of 11 counts of first-degree murder in that crash.

Mr. Summers, who commutes daily from his home in Simi Valley to downtown Los Angeles, where he works as a facilities manager, said that in the first crash, “I got a bump on my head.” The accident on Friday was rougher, he said.

But he said he was in a better position than most because he was sitting in the back of the train.

“Since my first day of rail commuting, I’ve always ridden in the back car, for fear of a head-on collision,” he said. “I guess I’ve done one smart thing.” On Saturday, he said he was planning to visit an urgent care center but expected to go back to work on Monday — on the train.

Wow, this guy definitely has an angel by his side. The deadly train crash has claimed 25 lives and has injured over 100 people. The reason for crash is reported to be engineers error.
