Maynard James Keenan is best known as the lead singer of the band Tool and A Perfect Circle. In 2003, he started a side project Puscifer as well. When Keenan was 11, his mother suffered a paralyzing cerebral aneurysm, which would later serve as the inspiration for many of his creative works. Two years later, she persuaded Keenan to live with his father in Michigan. In 1981, he served in the Army and when he got out he left for LA to pursue his dream in music. Over the years, Tool has built a cult like following and he is known for writing lyrics that connect with fans on a personal level. Describing Keenan’s contribution to Tool and A Perfect Circle, The New York Times wrote that “both groups rely on Mr. Keenan’s ability to dignify emotions like lust, anger and disgust, the honey in his voice adding a touch of profundity”.
His family has been involved in winemaking; he currently owns Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars in Arizona, where he resides. Among other business ventures, he is a partner in the Los Angeles restaurant Cobras & Matadors. Since rising to fame, Keenan has been a noted recluse, stating he hates the way rockstars are worshipped, although he does emerge to support charitable causes.
